Cleaning your room might seem like a chore, but what if it became a chance to raise generous, grounded kids? Every month — or seasonally — when it's time to declutter, turn the process into something more meaningful.
Encourage your children to go through their clothes, toys, and books. As they find items they’ve outgrown or no longer use, talk to them about where those items can go. Maybe there's a local shelter, a neighbor in need, or a community drive that could use those gently loved toys. Clean them up, fold them neatly, and package them with care.
As you do this together, explain the why. “Not everyone has what we have. Giving from the heart is one of the ways we care for our neighbors.” Teaching kids about generosity from an early age builds empathy and character. It also helps them respect the belongings they keep — because they learn that things have value, and that caring for what you have is part of caring for others.
To keep this fun and consistent, create a donation basket in your home. Let it live in your child's room or a shared hallway. When something’s no longer needed, they can add it on their own. Once it’s full, plan a family trip to drop it off. Let them experience the joy of giving firsthand.
