Family time at night often involves the TV — and that’s okay! But what if screen time could also help your kids dream, plan, and learn about financial goals?
Here’s an idea: Choose a family “dream destination” — somewhere you’d love to visit together. It could be Disney World, New York City, Hershey Park, or even a quiet log cabin in the woods. Then, one night a week, watch a video about that place together. You can use YouTube to find family-friendly travel vlogs, or try Hoopla for documentaries. Let everyone take turns picking the next place to explore.
Once your family is excited, introduce the next part: planning for it. Make it visual — print out pictures of the destination, create a goal board, or draw a savings thermometer. Begin talking about what it means to save money together. It’s not about putting financial pressure on children — it’s about inviting them into the process.
Use this time to talk about:
Turning off lights and conserving electricity
Avoiding food waste
Saving instead of always asking for new toys or takeout
The difference between small wants and big family goals
These aren’t lectures — they’re organic, values-based conversations. And kids love being part of something big. By connecting your screen time with real dreams and real decisions, you teach them not only about money — but about teamwork and long-term thinking.
